A new, vibrant urban district along the Rhine

Rijnpark is transforming from a former industrial area into a future-proof, green urban district with 3,500 homes, 1,400 jobs and a wide range of amenities. Studio D was commissioned to develop a series of perspectives and translate the urban design framework into a tangible and experiential narrative.

How can an industrial area transform into a vibrant, healthy and sustainable urban district?

Along the Rhine Boulevard, a lively waterfront emerges where walking, meeting and staying are central.
The plan builds on the area’s rich industrial history and the underlying polder structure. The Spoorpark forms the green backbone connecting the Veluwe with the Rhine.

We translated the urban design framework into a concrete, experiential story. Through strong perspectives and visualisations, the new district comes to life, most notably along the Rhine Boulevard, where walking, meeting and lingering take centre stage.

Our visualisations show how the district accommodates a healthy mix of functions: housing across a range of segments and typologies, social amenities such as a primary school and care facilities, and commercial spaces for retail, hospitality and creative enterprise. We illustrate how active ground floors animate the streets, while green inner courtyards and calm residential streets provide a sense of refuge and comfort.

The panoramic roof forms an active rooftop landscape where residents and visitors meet. From here, a unique view unfolds over the city, the Rhine and the expansive Veluwe landscape.
The industrial past forms the foundation for the sustainable city of tomorrow.
