Research by Design

Designing to understand

Through spatial analysis, scenario exploration, and iterative sketching, we create future perspectives that leave room for the unknown.

Design as a tool to translate complex societal challenges into future perspectives.

At Studio D, we use research by design to unravel complex spatial questions and give direction to policy and projects. We believe in the power of imagination to make abstract themes concrete and open for discussion. Through spatial analysis, scenario exploration, and iterative sketching, we generate insights that support vision development, sharpen project conditions, and define spatial alternatives. Our projects range from thematic explorations to area-specific challenges, always approached with an integrated perspective that connects user, place, and future. We do not see research by design as a separate phase, but as a way of working, a mindset that allows space for the unknown, the unexpected, and the as-yet undefined.

Research by design informed by parametric data and our eye-level perspective.

01

Data-driven design

We use data, algorithms, and parametric modelling techniques to create flexible and adaptable designs. By defining a set of parameters and rules, our designers can explore countless variations and quantify project outcomes—such as levels of sunlight, shade, greenery, and façade surface area.
02

Our eye-level perspective

Using 3D technology, we have developed tools that allow spatial projects to be experienced from eye level throughout the design process. This enables us to easily switch between design variants and instantly adjust conditions such as day and night, seasons, and weather, supporting better-informed decisions.
03

Rapid insight

Our research by design delivers rapid insight. By combining strong visuals, creativity, and data-driven knowledge, we can define a clear direction at an early stage. This gives projects a decisive start and quickly brings us to the core of the spatial challenge.

We also use research by design to critically question existing visions and plans, and to provide inspiring alternatives. In this way, we put societal issues on the agenda from a spatial perspective. Research by design is where imagination, knowledge, and strategy converge. Together with clients and partners, it helps us to reinterpret space, and to actively shape it. Not from the past, but with a clear focus on the world of tomorrow.
