Landtong Waalhaven is a distinctive peninsula along the Waal in Nijmegen. Currently an inward-looking and largely closed-off place, yet one with great potential for the city. With the arrival of a new bridge connection to the Handelskade, an entirely new perspective emerges. Studio D was commissioned to develop future scenarios that reimagine both the public realm and the existing real estate.

How do you transform an isolated area into a meaningful park that connects the city with the river?

The Landtong forms a link in the sequence of public spaces along the Waal. Thanks to a new connection, the site is no longer an endpoint.

Three scenarios illustrate how the Landtong can evolve into a lively river park. Topography, programme and movement routes give the area a new rhythm and an open character.

At the tip of the peninsula, a circular pavilion can emerge: a building that not only accommodates culture and social interaction, but also makes a clear statement on sustainability. The pavilion is designed using reused materials and a flexible layout, allowing it to adapt to changing functions and future needs. Its form and appearance respond to the landscape: light, transparent and inviting, with terraces and open spaces offering views over the Waal. Inside, there is room for exhibitions, workshops and gatherings, while outside the pavilion acts as the starting point for routes through the park and along the river.

The circular pavilion is a node where landscape, use and materiality converge

This scenario introduces a slender building volume with three staggered levels, providing direction and structure to the surrounding public space.

The topography not only ensures safety, but also creates opportunities for experience and views. The programme brings together culture, education and recreation, while the routes connect the site to the broader network along the Waal.

01

Routes

The central spine and new connections make the peninsula accessible and link city and river. Walking and cycling routes connect to the Waal Path, ensuring the Landtong becomes a natural link in the sequence of public spaces along the river.

02

Topography

The height landscape forms the foundation of each scenario. The relief guarantees flood safety, while also offering experiential value: routes along level changes, sightlines over the Waal and terraces at different heights.

03

Programme

There is room for functions such as a maritime museum, exhibition spaces, hospitality, art installations, an urban beach, swimming facilities and solar meadows. Together, they reinforce the identity of the peninsula as a place of encounter and imagination.

A layered volume provides structure and breathing space

Despite different accents, all perspectives share the same ambition: to transform the peninsula into a vibrant river park where past and future meet.

We explored how the existing buildings could be given a new role. Through circular transformation, the industrial character remains visible, while a new programme of museum, education and hospitality enriches the ensemble.

By stacking functions intelligently, a layered urban landscape emerges.
