Temporary housing with lasting quality

Temporary housing Smitskamp

Client
Municipality of Lochem
Sector
Landscape living

At the Smitskamp site in Gorssel, there is space for the construction of 35 homes. These homes are intended for Ukrainian refugees and people in urgent need of housing. Over the coming ten years, the dwellings must function well and provide a high-quality living environment. Studio D was commissioned to develop an urban design plan and a visual quality plan that safeguard the spatial quality of this development.

How do you design an attractive living environment that can be dismantled after ten years?

The design focuses on creating a green, climate-responsive place where families can feel safe, connected and truly at home.

The development of Smitskamp draws inspiration from local typologies and seamlessly blends the experience of living with the experience of the surrounding landscape. Homes are grouped in clusters and surrounded by lush planting, creating a gentle transition from private to shared spaces.

Because the project has a temporary character and is intended for a period of ten years, careful consideration was given to the necessary spatial interventions. The plan is based on modular, timber housing that integrates naturally into the landscape. Around the homes, as much collective outdoor space as possible is created.

01

Typology

The homes consist of narrow, two-storey units with pitched roofs. To create a varied spatial image, different ridge orientations and staggered building lines are applied, resulting in a village-like typology.

02

Minimal infrastructure

Limiting infrastructure for motorised traffic reduces its impact on the green character of the plan and creates more space for slow traffic.

03

Nature-inclusive

The use of permeable paving and subtle height differences ensures effective water management. In addition, the landscape design contributes positively to local flora and fauna.

For the further elaboration of the plan, visual quality guidelines have been defined. The architectural principles address aspects such as building and roof orientation, material use, side façades and façade openings. For the public realm, principles focus on softening the buildings, working with subtle changes in topography and greening the entire profile.

The plan balances sustainability, social cohesion and landscape

The homes are oriented to encourage social interaction. At the heart of the plan, play elements are introduced and space is created for residents to meet and spend time together.

The Municipality of Lochem is proud of the widely supported design for Smitskamp, developed in close collaboration with the local community and the sounding board group.
