Sector
Urban transformation

For the Paramaribo waterfront, the Paramaribo Urban Rehabilitation Program (PURP) was initiated to contribute to the socio-economic revitalisation of the historic city centre, the preservation of valuable heritage and the development of tourism. Studio D was commissioned to design an amphitheatre that forms the link between the park near the Presidential Palace and the boulevard along the Suriname River.

How can a new amphitheatre activate the waterfront from a social perspective?

The new amphitheatre, located on the former ‘Oude Vlaggenplein’, makes optimal use of the triangular site.

The design is inspired by historic stair typologies and the former location of the flagpoles that once stood on this site.

Conceptually, the historic function of the square is reinterpreted. The space remains open and green, and the former flagpoles remain legible in the form of solitary trees. In this way, the amphitheatre becomes a new landmark with a clear spatial organisation, surrounded by a green buffer zone. The circular form and centrally positioned stage create space for a range of spontaneous activities, such as dance performances and shows, stimulating social interaction.

The steps tell the story of the place and offer a stage for the city

The triangular square functions as an independent place to stay, focused on use and social interaction. The steps of the amphitheatre are designed to preserve sightlines between the river and the Presidential Palace. In this way, the design is structuring in nature and integrates seamlessly with its immediate surroundings.

The centrally located amphitheatre is surrounded by a green buffer zone with openings towards the surrounding streets, ensuring optimal movement routes.

Given Suriname’s climate, particular attention was also paid to a well-considered lighting plan. The steps of the amphitheatre are fitted with LED lighting, and light poles, together with the solitary trees, emphasise the circular form. This also enhances social safety.

The amphitheatre is a place where history, encounter and movement come together.
